The Eco delle Fecle publishes the well known predictions of the blessed Anna Maria Taigi, regarding the “ Holy Pope ” she foresaw was to succeed Gregory XVI. The following is a translation : Prophecy of the servant of God, Sister Anna Maria Taigi, Discalced Tertiary; who died at Rome, Anno Domini, 1837.

Of the characteristics of the Pontiff who shall he called “ Holy.” 1. He shall be elected in an extraordinary manner. 2. He shall be called on by the nations. 3. His name shall be heard in the mouth of children, and shall be spread throughout the whole world. 4. In the beginning he shall have to suffer, because he will have to combat with oppositions which he shall find on all sides, by which he shall be isolated, but the arm of the Lord shall be with him and shall make him conqueror. 5. He shall reform the Church, both in the regular and secular clergy, bringing them back to exact observance. 6. He shall reform the State, calling to his assistance seculars in the affairs of Government ; and thus, being less burthened, shall be able to attend more closely to the interests of the Church. 7. He shall have extraordinary lights from God; he shall be armed with great faith and cunning zeal. 8. He shall be himself a preacher to the people. 9. Many bad Christians shall return into the good way. 10. Many Gentiles shall come to the faith. 11. Many Heretics shall be converted, and some Schismatical Churches shall return to the centre of Catholic unity. 12. The Turk shall come to offer respect;, and many remote nations to render him homage. 13. At this period the sciences shall make progress by various discoveries. 14. In emergencies that shall arise he shall have aid from abroad. 15. He shall be a lover of the poor and of the people; and, at the same time, a severe maintainer of justice. 16. He shall reform the manners of the people so much, that boys may carry gold and silver in the open hand without being molested by any one. 17. He shall have a long life and a sufficient time to order all things for the glory of God. 18. But as he cannot of himself do everything, the omnipotent arm of God shall shake the world. 19. And he shall have the gift of miracles. 20. Woe to those who shall oppose and resist his ordinances. The hand of God shall be upon them even in this land. 21. The Lord shall give him such force and such power as shall make even kings subservient to him. Such shall he the beloved of the nations, and the favorite of Heaven. After having caused the Church to triumph on, earth wonderfully, full of merits, he shall be called by the Lord to a crown of eternal glory in Heaven. He shall be mourned universally by all the nations, and his memory shall be engraved on the hearts of future generations.

PROPHECIES CONCERNING PIUS IX. AND HIS REIGN. Anna Maria survived the election of Gregory XVI.only six years ; dying in 1837, nine years before Pius IX. was chosen to fill the See of Peter. She had seen, however, all the events of his Pontificate in the mysterious sun, but for the present these details, though recorded in the Processes, are not given to the public it becomes necessary, therefore, to test the evidence of those which are currently reported. Subjected to this

test, many of them will be found to rest upon satisfactory authority. We shall devote this chapter to recording what has transpired of most interest concerning this, to us, the most interesting portion of her prophecies, limiting ourselves to those which can be referred with most certainty to the venerable Servant of God.

Mgr. Luquet gives the following particulars as communicated to him, during the early days of the reign of Pius IX., by an estimable priest in whom Anna Maria had the greatest confidence, and who also at- tested the same in writing. ' She spoke,' says Mgr. Luquet, ' one day to this same priest of the persecution

which the Church was to undergo. She foretold what impious men would do at Eome, as we have unhappily

seen verified ; and she particularised what he who conducted the bark of Peter would then have to suffer. Wishing to know who this Pontiff would be, the priest asked her if he was then among the Cardinals ; she replied that he was not, but that he was a humble priest not at that time in the Pontifical States, but in a very distant country. And, in fact, the Abate Mastai was a simple priest attached at that period to the Iunciatura in Chili.

Anna Maria described the future Pontiff : she said that he would be elected in an extraordinary manner ; that he would introduce reforms that, if men were grateful for them, the Lord "would load them with blessings; but that, if they abused them, His all-powerful arm would inflict heavy chastisements upon them. She said that this Pontiff, chosen according to the Heart of God, would be assisted by Him with very special lights ; that his name would be famous throughout the world, and applauded by the people ; that the Turk himself would venerate him, and send to compliment him. She said that he was the holy Pontiff destined to bear the rage of the tempest which was to be let loose against the bark of Peter that the arm of God would sustain him, and defend him against the impious, who should be humbled and confounded; that in the end he would have the gift of miracles and that the Church, after painful vicissitudes, would obtain so glorious a triumph, that the world would be astounded.'
